Saturday August 13th Championship game Rays vs. Marlins
It was a pleasant day for the 2011 Championship game. The Marlins
once again came out swinging with one out in the first, Tyler McNair tripled to left followed
by a homerun from Kevin Melo for a 2 - 0 lead. The Marlins erupted for three
more runs in the third with hits from Malik Simpson, Ricky Lynch and Tyler
McNair followed by a double by Kevin Melo scoring the fourth and fifth runs.
The score after three Marlins 5 - Rays 0. In the bottom of the fourth the Rays
exploded for two runs on hits from Mark Flynn and Vidal Davis. In the fifth
Rays' player Jamari Jones homered to bring the Rays back in the game with the score the Marlins 5 -
Rays 3.
In the top of the sixth the Marlins loaded the bases, but failed to score. Then in the bottom of the sixth, the Rays tied the game at 5 to 5 to send the game into extra innings. The Marlins went down 1-2-3 with a couple good defensive plays. Mark Flynn led off with a single, Vidal Davis walked, the next two batters struck out. Tyler Corbett walked to load the bases. Kanye Lynch then walked to force in the winning run to give the Rays the walk-off win for the title. All year long the Rays have come from behind, showing a true champion. For the Marlins, never put your heads down keep them high. You battled all the way taking out the higher seeds and taking them both into extra innings. All of the six teams have given us truly a great season in our wooden bat league. To the parents thank you for showing respect for staff and officials and letting the coaches run their teams. Last thank you coaches for the time you all took in preparing your team and teaching them respect for the officials and other team players.
After nine complete innings which needed to be finished on Thursday night, the Marlins beat a tough Cubs teams by the score of 6-3. Both teams had multiple opportunities Tuesday night to close out the game but could not because of solid pitching from each team. Michael Cruse got out of a bases load, no out jam, by striking out three straight Marlins to keep the game tied at 3-3. Kevin Melo also stepped up to the mound Tuesday night, holding the winning run at third with only one out, by striking out two Cubs hitters.
Pitching was the name of the game and may have been the best display of defensive baseball the wood bat league has shown since it's beginning. Both teams handled battled, but the Marlins kept the pressure on in the top of the 9th scoring three runs. It was hard to see any team lose, but I tip my cap to the Cubs and a tremendous season, thank you Richie and Angela for being great for our kids.
Good luck to the Marlins, who will face the Rays in the Championship on Saturday morning at Town Field starting at 10:30 AM.
Wednesday, August 10th: Semi Finals: # 2 Rays vs. # 3 Tigers
Luckily, the rain held off and it was a great night for baseball. The Tigers struck first when Xavier Phillips homered with one out in the first. The Rays responded in the bottom half with a triple by Khalil Lynch and a single by Justin Nguyen.
Both teams scored a run in the second, the Tigers on a homer by Leon Lewin and the second triple from the Rays’ Khalil Lynch knocking in Dymari Guillaume. That would be as close as the game would get as the Rays scored a run in the third, fourth and two in the fifth for a 6 to 2 win and advancing to the finals against either the Cubs or Marlins, who will resume play tonight in the top of the eighth when game was called because of darkness for the safety of the players on Tuesday night. Miguel and Neil had a great season with the Tigers, but came up just short against a tough Rays squad. Final score Rays 6 – Tigers 2.
